This is now a course that is a replay.
In this two-part workshop, I will help you grow increasingly confidence with your use of color.
Workshop #1: Feb 1st, 1-2:40 pm EST, with a ten minute break
This workshop will be entirely about Color Theory. We will discuss the history of color, why each of us see color differently, and go into detail about the three properties of color.
At the end of the first workshop we will discuss color palettes (what are they? Why have one?) and have a small homework assignment for the week revolving around color palettes.
In this workshop you will need a pencil or pen, and a sketchbook or paper if you wish to take notes. The slideshow will be made available to students.
Workshop #2: Feb 7th, 1-2:40 pm EST, with a ten minute break
This workshop will be all about applying our newfound understanding of color theory.
Using your medium of choice, we will better understand why and how an artist chooses a palette then create a color chart to observe the color relationships of our selected palette.
In this workshop you will need: the medium of your choice (colored pencils, oil paints, acrylics, watercolors, etc.) and it’s assorted tools, a large piece of heavy weight watercolor paper, and a pencil. I will conduct the demonstration using acrylic paint.
Ultimately, you will walk away from this workshop series being able to:
- Discuss and choose a color palette
- Understand and better use the three properties of color
- Create a color wheel and USE it
- Learn how to use complementary colors without making them muddy
- Work with warm and cool colors
- Confidently layer colors
Ugh, Carrie, I WANT this workshop so bad, but I can’t make it live! What do I do?
Don’t worry! I’ve got you covered. If you sign up for this workshop, you get full access to the replay videos. You will be able to download them to watch (and pause) at your leisure.
Additionally, ALL students who are on Instagram can use the hashtag #artiststrongworkshop for feedback and to get your burning questions answered.
Who this workshop IS FOR:
The self-taught creative feeling insecure or lacking confidence around their use of color.
The artist who has seen or even posted a color wheel in your studio or making space who doesn’t really know how or why to use it.
The color curious who want to know more of the theory behind color, and wish to start using color more consciously in their art.
Who this workshop ISN’T FOR:
The advanced color student → If you have done A LOT of research and studies around color, this will be more of a review.
The feedback fearful → Feedback is absolutely integral to our ability to grow and learn as a creative. If you don’t want feedback nor support with your art around color, don’t sign up!

Your Instructor
I’ve studied Art and Art History at Colgate University as well as completed a masters in Educational Leadership with The George Washington University. I’ve taught art to all ages, from elementary school through to adulthood. Countless people I’ve worked with are told their interest in the arts is trivial.
No more.
In my early 20s I was part of a touring exhibition of artists whose work was exhibited at both The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as well as The Smithsonian.
My work has been exhibited across the US as well as in United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Canada. Before this, I didn’t think my work was important or valuable (or even really “art”) until I had a gallery showing. Now I know otherwise.
I'm so grateful for this community and space we've built. I hope we continue to all grow and learn together.
