Everytime I go on a trip I think I’m going to do something with my photos when I get home, or even actively make art ON the trip.

It’s never quite what I imagine.

So I thought, what if I could recreate the experience of traveling to these amazing places with a specific focus on making art in response to our "travel"?

Do you want to join me?

It’s called Embark on Art and think of it as a mashup of art challenges, courses, urban sketching, and cultural excursions from the comfort of your home.

Travel isn’t all rainbows and butterflies

Have you traveled on a plane lately? I recently returned from a trip where I felt more like a sardine and less like a person about to have a two week holiday. And we paid for checked luggage!

Taking big trips isn’t always easy. We can get nervous about different languages, navigating transportation, currency, and more.

Even when we overcome those fears things are bound to go wrong, and we have to adjust to those changes and roll with the punches.

On my first international trip as an American, I was hospitalized for 6 days with an unknown illness that required a blood transfusion. When I got home I told myself I’d never travel again.

Ha.Ha.Ha.

I was only 18 when I said that and really the opposite happened. I studied abroad in Sweden, moved to Dubai, and then stayed in the Middle East for 9 years before moving to Canada for 3.

(Here I am, gobbing on an entire meringue by myself in Bourdeaux, France:)

I guess when you do face a worst-case scenario, you realize there is nothing left to hold you back.

But another thing I learned about travel that one of you wisely shared with me is the following:

Travel means being able to leave where you are currently, even if it’s just in your mind.

That is why I created Embark on Art.

No lost luggage.

No planes or boat rides.

No boarding your fur family.

Embark on Art is a chance to explore somewhere new from the safety of your home OR take with you if you’re ready to take flight!

Embark on Art: Paris has a 3.5 day itinerary that includes architecture, churches, museums, and more paired with art activities inspired by the virtual excursions we take. (Itinerary is here).

You can leave where you are (in your mind), learn something new, and make some art.

Travel isn’t all rainbows and butterflies.

But we only have rainbows because of the rain.

I hope this inspires you to get outside of your comfort zone and explore more of the wonderful world around you.

All aboard!
